Dogma
Starring: Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Linda Florentino, Salma Hayek, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock. Cameos by George Carlin, Janeane Garofalo, and Alanis Morissette.
Director: Kevin Smith.
MPAA Rating : R (Guess: Strong language, adult themes, sexual situations, religious imagery, surprising moments)
Plot: Bartleby (Affleck) and Loki (Damon) are two angles who once defied God. For their crime, they were cast down to the Earth to live for all time in Wisconsin. However, due to a loophole in the dogmatic law of the Catholic Church, the two set out to reenter heaven, little realizing that once they return, all of creation will be undone. They are opposed by the Last Scion (Florentino) who’s not exactly a true believer. Along the way, Serendipity (Hayek), Rufus, the Thirteenth Apostle (Rock), and Jay and Silent Bob (Mewes and Smith) contend to stop the rouge angels from destroying all creation.
Notes: This movie was bashed by the Catholic church (unsurprisingly), little realizing that Dogma was intended not to chastise or insult religion or Holy Mother Church, but to present Catholicism in a positive light. The movie is unapologetically pro-Christian, that the message of hope and Divine Law of God is lost behind the fantasy elements of the rubber poop monster (a Golgathan, literally born of the waste of the crucified of Golgotha.)
My Rating: Dogma is an excellent film, which, if taken at face value would confuse and offend many people. If one looks at the full message behind the work, however, one can see the genius of Kevin Smith shine through. See this movie. Five Goons out of Five.
